How Do You Stay Connected to Your Bisexual Identity in a Straight-Looking Relationship?

Being in a different-gender relationship can cause other people to assume that you are straight, even when bisexuality remains an important part of who you are.

For some people, this does not feel particularly difficult. Their relationship is only one part of their life, and they do not need their orientation to be visible in every situation. Others begin to feel erased, disconnected from LGBTQ+ community, or hesitant to mention bisexuality because they expect confusion or questions about their commitment.

Staying connected to your identity does not have to mean changing the relationship or making your orientation public. It might involve using the word bisexual when it feels relevant, talking openly with your partner, maintaining queer friendships, engaging with community, or simply allowing yourself to recognise your attractions without shame.

A supportive partner does not need to experience bisexuality in the same way, but it can matter that they do not treat it as irrelevant just because the relationship appears straight to outsiders.

What has helped you feel seen and connected to your bisexual identity while in a straight-looking relationship?

Please avoid suggesting that someone must become publicly visible, explore outside the relationship, or prove their bisexuality through dating history.
