What Has Helped You Feel Safe and Respected While Dating as Trans or Non-Binary?

Dating while trans or non-binary can involve questions that other people may never have to think about. When do you tell someone you’re trans? Do you mention it in a dating profile, before meeting, after a first date, or only when it becomes relevant?

There can also be questions about safety, privacy, attraction and physical boundaries. Someone may be attracted to you but still make assumptions about your body, treat your trans identity as a sexual curiosity, or fail to see you fully as your gender. On the other hand, a respectful date or partner can make those conversations feel surprisingly ordinary.

What has helped you feel safe and respected while dating?

Have you found a way of handling disclosure that works for you? What makes someone’s attraction feel respectful rather than fetishizing? And are there questions or behaviours that immediately make you feel more — or less — comfortable?

There is no single right way to navigate dating. Share only what feels safe.
