What If Your Partner Wants You to Come Out Before You’re Ready?

A partner may want the relationship to feel open and fully acknowledged while you are not yet ready for other people to know that you are bisexual.

They may feel uncomfortable hiding part of the relationship, want support from friends or family, or believe that greater visibility would help you accept yourself. Those needs can be genuine, but coming out still involves your identity, privacy, and possible consequences.

A supportive partner can explain how secrecy affects them without setting a deadline, disclosing your bisexuality for you, or treating hesitation as shame. You may need time because of family, work, housing, culture, safety, or simply because you want control over personal information.

Both people’s feelings matter, but not every conflict can be solved through immediate disclosure. Couples may need to discuss what can be shared, with whom, and whether there are other ways to prevent the partner from feeling hidden while protecting the bisexual person’s boundaries.

Has a partner ever wanted you to come out before you felt ready, and how did you balance their needs with your right to control your disclosure?

Please avoid pressuring anyone to come out or treating a partner’s feelings as permission to disclose someone else’s identity.
