Bisexuality is often defined through attraction to more than one gender, but that definition does not always capture what the identity means in someone’s life.
For some people, being bisexual is mainly a useful word for describing attraction. For others, it also connects to community, personal history, relationships, visibility, or a way of understanding experiences that once seemed disconnected.
Its meaning may change over time. Early on, the label might provide an answer to a confusing question. Later, it may become quieter and more ordinary—or more important after finding community, entering a relationship, encountering erasure, or reflecting on the past.
There is no requirement for bisexuality to shape someone’s personality, politics, relationships, or daily life. It can be central, private, practical, emotional, or simply one accurate part of a much larger person.
