What Helps When Commitment Feels Like It Might Erase Part of Your Bisexuality?

Committing to one person can sometimes create an unexpected fear that another part of your bisexuality will become invisible or unexplored.

You may be happy in the relationship and still wonder whether choosing one partner means closing the door on an important possible future. Other people may also begin describing you as straight or gay according to the relationship, making it feel as though commitment has replaced your identity.

These feelings do not automatically mean the relationship is wrong or that you need additional partners. Monogamy always involves choosing one relationship rather than pursuing every possible attraction. For bisexual people, however, that ordinary choice can become tangled with erasure, stereotypes, or grief about experiences never lived.

It may help to separate commitment from identity. A relationship describes who you are with; it does not fully describe who you can be attracted to. Your bisexuality does not need to remain visible through ongoing dating or exploration to stay real.

Have you ever worried that commitment would erase part of your bisexuality, and what helped you feel that both your relationship and identity could remain genuine?

Please avoid presenting exploration, non-monogamy, or ending a relationship as the necessary solution.
