When Support Becomes Local: Building Circles of Belonging

What if the connections we make online could eventually help people feel safer and less alone where they live?

An online community can be a starting point. People meet, exchange experiences, build trust and discover that others share their values.

Sometimes those connections may grow into small local circles of friendship, mutual support and belonging.

Not everyone needs to think alike. What matters is a shared commitment to dignity, equality, privacy and respect.

And something important can change when people know they are not standing alone.

Someone facing harassment, exclusion or hostility may have trusted people nearby who can listen, stand beside them, help document or report incidents, intervene calmly when safe, or simply offer somewhere to turn.

Support does not have to mean confrontation. Sometimes it is one person refusing to look away, another checking in afterward, or several people helping someone access appropriate assistance.

A larger community does not automatically guarantee safety. Solidarity must never become intimidation, retaliation or taking the law into our own hands. Respect for boundaries, confidentiality, consent and peaceful action must remain central.

This is not about creating groups against other people.

It is about creating connections so fewer people have to face difficult situations alone.

These circles might begin with just two or three people. They might grow slowly, remain informal, or develop into welcoming local communities. Participation should always be voluntary, with no pressure to disclose personal information or meet in person.

At BiFiles, we believe meaningful community can begin with a conversation.

Have you ever experienced a moment when someone stood beside you, spoke up for you, or helped you feel less alone? What made their support meaningful?

Share your experience if you feel comfortable, without revealing anyone's private information.
