Media does more than reflect ideas about bisexuality. It can also shape what people expect bisexual people to be like in real life.
Bisexual characters have often been portrayed as confused, unfaithful, highly sexual, manipulative, or unable to choose. Sometimes bisexuality is only implied, used for surprise or drama, and then forgotten once the character enters a relationship.
These patterns can influence how partners, friends, family members, and bisexual people themselves interpret bisexuality. Someone may expect a bisexual partner to become dissatisfied with monogamy, assume attraction must be perfectly equal, or believe that a current relationship proves the identity was only temporary.
Not every imperfect portrayal causes harm, and people may interpret the same character differently. But when similar stereotypes appear repeatedly, they can become difficult to separate from real-life expectations.
