How Should Stories Separate Bisexuality From Infidelity or Non-Monogamy?

Bisexual characters are often portrayed as though attraction to more than one gender naturally makes monogamy difficult or faithfulness unlikely.

A storyline may use bisexuality to explain cheating, constant dissatisfaction, or a desire for multiple partners without separating orientation from personal choices and relationship agreements. This can reinforce real-life assumptions that a bisexual partner will inevitably “miss” another gender or cannot be fulfilled by one person.

Non-monogamous bisexual characters can still provide valuable representation. The problem is not the relationship structure itself, but repeatedly treating bisexuality as its automatic cause—or presenting dishonesty as an unavoidable part of the identity.

More thoughtful stories could show bisexual people in both monogamous and non-monogamous relationships, with each portrayed through communication, consent, compatibility, and individual preference rather than stereotype.

Have you seen a story that handled bisexuality and relationship structure thoughtfully—or one that made bisexuality seem like an explanation for infidelity or dissatisfaction?

Please avoid treating monogamy or non-monogamy as inherently better. The focus is whether stories distinguish orientation from behaviour and consensual relationship choices.
