Can You Belong in Bisexual Community Without Sharing the Same Lifestyle or Views?

Sharing a bisexual identity does not mean sharing the same relationships, values, interests, or way of life.

Some people are openly involved in LGBTQ+ culture, while others are private or rarely think about community. Members may be monogamous, non-monogamous, single, married, religious, non-religious, politically engaged, or mainly looking for practical support rather than a broader social identity.

These differences can make a community richer, but they can also leave someone wondering whether they truly belong. A space may begin to feel narrow when one relationship style, life stage, level of visibility, or way of expressing bisexuality is treated as the expected norm.

Belonging does not require agreement on everything. It does require enough mutual respect for people to describe their own lives without being pressured to copy, defend, or distance themselves from someone else’s choices.

Have you ever felt out of place in a bisexual community because your lifestyle, relationships, or views differed from the apparent majority—and what would have helped you feel included?

Please discuss differences respectfully and avoid treating one way of living as the correct bisexual experience.
