People often talk about gender identity and sexual orientation as separate parts of who we are. But understanding your own gender can still affect the words you use to describe your sexuality.
Someone might realize they are trans or non-binary and start wondering whether labels such as bisexual, gay, lesbian, straight, pansexual or queer still describe them in the same way. For some people, only the label changes. For others, understanding their gender also helps them understand their attraction differently.
You do not have to find a perfectly permanent combination of labels. How you understand yourself — and the language that feels useful — can develop over time.
Has understanding or questioning your gender ever changed how you describe your sexuality?
Did your attractions feel different, did mainly the label change, or did nothing about your orientation change at all?
